Publishing a range raises application quality and cuts wasted interviews on both sides.
One paragraph on what this role exists to do — not a list of duties.
One per line.
One per line. Only what is genuinely essential — everything else belongs below.

Nothing you type here leaves your browser — the document is built on this page, and there is no server to send it to. Printing gives you the document alone, without the page around it.

[JOB TITLE] [Company name] Department: [Department] Level: Mid level Location: [Location] · Hybrid ABOUT THE ROLE [One paragraph on what this role is for] WHAT YOU WILL DO • [Add the responsibilities, one per line] WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR • [Add the requirements that are genuinely essential, one per line] HOW TO APPLY Send your application to [email address]. We read every application and will come back to you either way. -------------------------------------------------------- [Company name] is an equal opportunity employer. We consider all applicants without regard to gender, religion, caste, disability, sexual orientation, marital status or any other characteristic protected by law. If you need an adjustment to the process at any stage, tell us and we will arrange it. Note on requirements: candidates from under-represented groups often apply only when they meet every listed criterion. If you meet most of what is above, apply.
The most useful thing a job description can do is separate what is genuinely essential from what is merely desirable. A list of fifteen must-haves filters out good candidates and does nothing to filter in the right one.
The closing note is deliberate. Candidates from under-represented groups apply substantially less often when they do not meet every listed criterion, and saying so plainly changes who applies.
Frequently asked questions
- What should a job description include?
- What the role exists to do, the responsibilities, the genuinely essential requirements, the desirable ones separately, the location and work mode, the reporting line, and how to apply. A salary range if you are willing to publish one.
- Should a job description include a salary range?
- It raises application quality and removes wasted interviews on both sides. The argument against is internal — existing employees see it — which is a compensation-transparency question rather than a hiring one.
- How long should a job description be?
- Short enough to be read. Most job descriptions lose candidates through length and through a requirements list nobody could satisfy. Six to eight responsibilities and four to six essential requirements is usually enough.
