Decimal hours, not hours and minutes, is what payroll needs — 7h 30m is 7.5, not 7.3.

Under the Code on Wages, hours worked beyond the normal working day attract overtime at at least twice the ordinary rate of wages.

Two things make this less trivial than it looks. Payroll wants decimal hours — seven and a half hours is 7.5, not 7.30 — and shifts that cross midnight break a naive subtraction.

This handles both, and converts to pay if you give it a rate.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal?
Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours. 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.5; 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75. Writing 7.30 for seven and a half hours is the most common timesheet error.
How do I calculate hours for an overnight shift?
Count from the in time to midnight, then from midnight to the out time. This calculator does it automatically whenever the out time is earlier than the in time.
Should unpaid breaks be deducted from hours worked?
Yes. A genuine unpaid break during which the employee is free to leave is not working time. A break where they must remain available generally is.
