Weekly rotation is most common. Longer cycles are easier on sleep but harder on fairness.

Each team rotates one shift forward every 7 days. 2. A minimum rest of 11 consecutive hours is allowed between two shifts. 3. A night shift is followed by a rest day before a morning shift. 4. Swaps must be agreed between both employees and approved in advance. 5. Overtime beyond the rostered shift is paid at not less than twice the ordinary rate of wages, as required by the Code on Wages.
A rotation is a schedule plus a set of rules. The schedule is easy: every team moves one shift forward each cycle, so the pattern repeats and nobody is permanently on nights.
The rules are what the schedule is judged on — minimum rest between shifts, a rest day after a run of nights, and how swaps are handled. Those print with the rota here rather than living in someone's head.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a forward-rotating shift pattern?
- One where each team moves to a later shift each cycle — morning to evening to night — rather than backwards. Forward rotation follows the body's natural tendency to drift later and is consistently easier to adapt to than backward rotation.
- How much rest is needed between shifts?
- Eleven consecutive hours is the widely used minimum and is what most rotation designs build around. Indian working-time rules also require weekly rest of at least one full day.
- How long should a rotation cycle be?
- Weekly is the most common. Shorter cycles spread unpopular shifts more evenly; longer ones let people adapt to a sleep pattern before it changes again. Both arguments are real, which is why the cycle length is a setting here.
