Compounding a single year's percentage forward is a thought experiment, not a forecast.
A hike on CTC is not a hike on take-home. If the increase loads into employer PF or the gratuity provision, the monthly bank credit moves less than the percentage suggests — the in-hand salary calculator will show the difference.
A hike calculator is arithmetic, but two things make it useful rather than trivial: showing the increase in monthly terms, and showing what it is worth after inflation. A 6% rise in a 6% inflation year is not a rise.
Work in either direction — enter a percentage to get the new salary, or a new salary to get the percentage.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I calculate a salary hike percentage?
- Subtract the old salary from the new one, divide by the old salary and multiply by 100. A move from ₹10,00,000 to ₹11,50,000 is a 15% hike.
- Is a 10% hike good?
- It depends on inflation and on where you started. Against 5% inflation, a 10% hike is a 5% real increase. Against 7% it is closer to 3%. The real figure is the one worth negotiating on.
- Why did my take-home not rise as much as my hike?
- Because a hike on CTC is not a hike on take-home. If the increase loads into employer PF, the gratuity provision or a benefit inside CTC, the bank credit moves less — and a higher salary can also push part of your income into a higher tax slab.
