A performance bonus is contractual, not statutory. It is separate from statutory bonus under the Code on Wages, and being paid one does not discharge the other where the employee is within the statutory threshold.
Bonus is taxed as salary in the month it is paid, so a single large payout can push that month's TDS well above the usual figure.
Most variable pay schemes multiply three things: a target percentage of fixed pay, a company performance factor and an individual performance factor, prorated for time served. The arithmetic is simple; what people want is the comparison against target.
This is a contractual bonus. It is separate from statutory bonus under the Code on Wages, and paying one does not discharge the other where the employee is inside the statutory threshold.
Frequently asked questions
- How is a performance bonus calculated?
- Usually as fixed pay × target bonus percentage × company multiplier × individual multiplier, prorated for months served. The two multipliers are what turn a target into an actual payout.
- Is a performance bonus the same as statutory bonus?
- No. Statutory bonus is a legal entitlement under the Code on Wages for employees below the notified wage threshold. A performance bonus is contractual and discretionary within whatever the scheme says.
- Why is so much tax deducted from my bonus?
- Bonus is taxed as salary in the month it is paid, so a single large payout lands in one month's TDS calculation and can push that month's deduction well above the usual figure. It evens out over the year.
