A relieving letter says the employment has ended cleanly: resignation accepted, notice dealt with, employee released as of a date. Indian employers routinely ask a new joiner for one, which makes withholding it a serious act rather than an administrative delay.
It also confirms that confidentiality obligations continue, which is the one term people assume ends with the job.

- Can an employer refuse to give a relieving letter?
- It can withhold one where the notice period was not served or dues are outstanding, but doing so has real consequences for the employee and is frequently challenged. Withholding it as leverage, rather than for a stated reason, is difficult to defend.
- What is the difference between a relieving letter and an experience letter?
- A relieving letter confirms the employment has ended and the employee is released. An experience letter certifies the employment itself — dates, designation, conduct — and is addressed to whomsoever it may concern.
- Can a relieving letter be issued before the full and final settlement?
- Yes, and often is. The letter can state that the settlement will follow separately. Gratuity in particular has its own 30-day statutory deadline and does not wait for anything else.
