They held the position of [Designation] at the time of leaving. During their tenure with us, we found their conduct and performance to be satisfactory. An experience certificate confirms three things: that the person worked here, for how long, and in what role. Everything else is optional and some of it is unwise.
Conduct and salary are included here as switches because both cut two ways. A conduct line is expected in India and its absence is read as a signal; a salary line helps with verification but hands the next employer a negotiating position.
Frequently asked questions
- Is an employer obliged to give an experience letter?
- There is no single statutory obligation to issue one, but refusing without cause is poor practice and can be challenged, particularly where it prevents someone taking up other employment. Most employers issue one as a matter of course on a clean exit.
- What is the difference between an experience letter and a relieving letter?
- An experience letter confirms the employment — dates, role, conduct — and is addressed to whomsoever it may concern. A relieving letter confirms that the employment has ended and that the employee has been released, and is addressed to the employee.
- Should an experience letter mention salary?
- It is optional. Including it helps a background check and complicates a future negotiation. Many employers issue the certificate without it and confirm salary separately to a verification agency on request.
