Three holidays are national and go on every Indian calendar: Republic Day on 26 January, Independence Day on 15 August and Gandhi Jayanti on 2 October. Everything else is a state or company decision, and most of it moves year to year with the lunar calendar.

That is why this asks you for the list rather than guessing it. Enter one holiday per line as a date and a name, and mark any restricted holidays as optional.

Frequently asked questions

How many public holidays are mandatory in India?
Three are national and must be granted to every employee: Republic Day, Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti. Beyond those, the number and choice are set by state Shops and Establishments or Industrial Establishments (National and Festival Holidays) Acts, which vary.
What is a restricted or optional holiday?
A holiday from a published list that an employee may choose to take, usually one or two a year, rather than one the whole company observes. It lets a diverse workforce observe the festivals that matter to them without closing the office for all of them.
Does a holiday falling on a Sunday have to be substituted?
There is no general national rule requiring a substitute day. Some state rules and many company policies grant one; state the position on the calendar itself so nobody has to ask.
