Compensatory time off earned and never taken becomes an untracked liability and a grievance. An expiry period, stated on the form, is what stops that.
The form also records that the extra work was approved in advance, which is what separates compensatory off from someone deciding to work a Saturday.
Frequently asked questions
- Is compensatory off mandatory in India?
- Where an employee works on a weekly off or a national holiday, the applicable rules generally require either a substituted holiday or overtime pay. Which applies depends on the state and establishment type — check before choosing.
- Can compensatory off be encashed?
- Normally no, and most policies say so explicitly. Where the applicable rules require overtime pay rather than time off, overtime is paid instead — at not less than twice the ordinary rate of wages.
- Should compensatory off expire?
- Yes. An expiry keeps it as time off rather than an accumulating liability, and it makes people actually take the rest the comp-off exists to give them.
