An absenteeism rate without its available days is not a number anyone can act on. Both are shown here for that reason.

Approved leave is not absenteeism. Counting it makes a generous leave policy look like a discipline problem, which is why it is excluded by default here.
The distribution matters more than the average. Three per cent spread evenly is a healthy workforce; three per cent concentrated in a tenth of the team is a specific problem with a specific cause.
The absenteeism rate is days lost divided by available days, where available days is headcount multiplied by working days in the period. Both halves are shown here, because the rate alone tells you nothing about scale.
Approved leave is excluded by default. It is planned, it is an entitlement, and counting it turns a good leave policy into a bad statistic.
The Bradford factor
The Bradford factor weights frequent short absences much more heavily than one long one: instances cubed, multiplied by total days. Ten separate one-day absences score far higher than one ten-day illness.
It is useful for spotting a pattern and dangerous as a trigger. Used mechanically it penalises chronic conditions and disabilities, and several employers have had to withdraw it for exactly that reason. Treat a high score as a prompt for a conversation, never as a disciplinary threshold.
Frequently asked questions
- How do you calculate absenteeism rate?
- Days lost divided by available days, multiplied by 100. Available days is headcount multiplied by the number of working days in the period.
- Should approved leave be counted in absenteeism?
- No. Absenteeism measures unplanned absence. Including approved leave makes a generous policy look like a discipline problem and makes the figure useless for comparison.
- What is a normal absenteeism rate?
- Two to four per cent is a common range for office work. What matters more is the distribution — the same average can describe a healthy workforce or a small number of people with a specific and addressable problem.
